Garden Gates

Many wooden garden gates can be painted or stained, but this will depend on the timber and any treatment already applied. Check the manufacturer’s care instructions before applying a paint, stain or preservative, and make sure the product you use is suitable for exterior timber.

A gate should be installed with appropriate posts, hinges and fixings capable of supporting its weight. Periodically check the hinges and other hardware for movement or wear. If a gate begins to drop or catch, the fittings or alignment may need adjusting.

This will depend on the gate, your existing boundary and your DIY experience. Accurate positioning of the posts and hinges is important to ensure the gate hangs correctly and opens and closes smoothly. Always follow the installation instructions supplied with your chosen product.

They can be suitable for openings between walls or pillars where an appropriate fixing method and suitable support can be provided. The correct installation will depend on the gate, surrounding structure and fittings being used.

Enough clearance should be provided for the gate to open without catching on the ground. The amount required will depend on the installation and the surface beneath it, particularly where the ground slopes or is uneven.
