A strong, level base is one of the most important parts of any garden building. The right foundation can help extend the life of your shed, protect it from damp and rot, and make sure the structure remains stable for years to come.

There are several different base options available, each suited to different gardens, budgets and building sizes. Below, we take a closer look at some of the most popular choices and explain when each option may be right for you.

  • What Shed Base Options Are Available?

    Wooden Shed Bases

A Wooden Shed Base is one of the most popular and versatile choices. It can be installed on a variety of surfaces, including grass and paving slabs, making it a practical option for many gardens.

The pressure-treated timbers offer long-lasting protection against rot, while adjustable corner spikes can help create a level foundation on uneven ground. Wooden bases are also relatively quick to assemble and can provide a more affordable alternative to concrete.

For selected products, our installation team may be able to construct the wooden base at the same time as your shed. We recommend checking whether this service is included before placing your order.

  • Plastic Pro Bases

If you're looking for a low-profile and cost-effective solution, a Plastic Pro Base could be an ideal choice.

Made from recycled plastic, the base features interlocking grids and includes a membrane as standard. This helps water drain away while reducing weed growth beneath your garden building.

Plastic bases need to be prepared before our installation team arrives. Simply position the membrane, connect the grid sections and fill them with suitable gravel or pebbles, making sure the finished surface is completely level.

    Paving Slab Bases

Many gardens already have a paved area that may be suitable for a new shed. If the slabs are solid, level and in good condition, your garden building can often be installed directly on top without the need for an additional base.

Treating the shed bearers with a suitable preservative before installation can provide some extra protection against moisture.

If you don't already have a suitable paved area, our Slabbed Base Preparation Service can help create one for you. Slab bases are generally best suited to smaller garden buildings, and we typically recommend them for structures up to around 3 metres in length.

  • Concrete Bases

For larger sheds and heavier garden buildings, a Concrete Base provides a strong, durable foundation.

Our team can assess the installation area, prepare the ground and construct the base before your garden building is installed. This helps take much of the work out of preparing for your new shed and provides a solid, long-lasting foundation.

Installation times can vary depending on the building, site and weather conditions, but our team will advise you on what to expect before work begins.

    Decking Bases

For a more decorative finish, a Decking Base can help turn your garden building into a real feature.

A shed, summer house or other garden building can be incorporated into a raised decking area, creating an attractive space for seating, entertaining or relaxing. It combines the practical benefits of a raised timber base with a stylish finish that can transform the surrounding garden.
